I'm Back.....Sort Of

So the last you all heard from me I was bidding you farewell and riding of into the sunset, well not quite but you get the picture. Well over the last 3 months god have I missed blogging and writing. Understandably my reasons for leaving were my daughter now being a Type 1 Diabetic, which rendered baking just a cruel sport for my 3 year old but with itchy typing fingers I'm back in the world of blogging, just on a different blog.

Yes I have started a new blog. One that encompasses the new life we've all been thrown into. A parenting and lifestyle blog called Mama's Done Good where I focus on all things family related, diabetes and lots of other things. Truly it's just broadened my writing matter. I'm so excited and hope to see a few of my The Velvet Moon Baker readers over there.

Again thanks for your continued support for my one and only baking website.

See you on the other side......well the other blog

A Sad Goodbye

As you may have noticed I have been a little absent over the past few weeks. Well finally I have the time to let you in on the most recent events.

Due to my Cholestasis of Pregnancy I was up and down from the hospital twice a week to keep an eye on the baby, due to the condition I was induced on the 23rd of October. After 3 failed attempts at being induced over the course of 2 days my doctor broke my waters at 4.30pm on the 24th October. After some horrific pain which came on rather quickly Mason Owen Kelly was born at 8.38pm on the same day.

Scarily although his heart was beating and his breathing regular he was completely non-responsive when he entered the world. They did everything they could think of for a good 15 minutes in the labour room to get him to cry but he was continually floppy so he was rushed to the neo-natal ward where 30 minutes later he came round and kicked up an almighty fuss to be fed. He stayed in neo-natal for 2 nights before I was allowed him back just incase. He's happy and healthy now and feeding like a champ.

We finally got back on the Monday to a rather eager big sister who had been dying to get us both home.

Unfortunately on Wednesday Faith was admitted to hospital and then diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. She's still in hospital with himself as they try to get her the right amounts of insulin and educate us on how to care for her properly now that her body isn't producing any natural insulin at all. We were very lucky to have just by chance got it found because she was admitted with no complications from the diabetes. We were told many children come in so ill and are admitted for a very long time, fingers crossed our family will be back together by the middle of the week.

Due to what I can only describe as the most bizarre week of my life I'm sadly deciding to stop working on The Velvet Moon Baker. I've loved baking and showing you all the delicious treats I've conjured up but it wouldn't be fair to bake such wonderful things only to have explain to my 3 year old that she isn't aloud to taste any of it.

The health and happiness of my family has to come first and so my blog has to lose out.

You never know you may see me start up a new blog all about our adventures into the world of childhood diabetes but for now all my attention needs to be focussed on my brave little lady and her equally as brave little brother.

Thanks to everyone who has read my posts, be it just a quick glance or religiously since the very beginning. This blog has given me so much joy and knowing that people out there have actually enjoyed it has made it all worthwhile.

So before I start waffling on I must say goodbye.

Ultimate Vanilla Cupcakes

I was so excited when Dr. Oetker approached me and asked if I’d like to review some of their newest products that I said I don't think I even paused for a second before saying yes. Dr. Oetker products are the base of most of my bakes so I was excited to see what kind of fabulousness they were bringing out now.

When I opened my parcel of goodies my eyes were immediately drawn to the Vanilla Bean Grinder and my 3 year old daughter instantly tried to open (and eat) the Rainbow Popping Candy Sprinkles, an act I would totally have joined in with if I hadn’t have needed to bake with them first.

Classic Chocolate Cupcakes

classic chocolate cupcakes

Oh dear lord ladies and gentlemen what a crazy couple of weeks it has been.

This pregnancy has turned into a whirlwind of hospital visits, blood sugar level tests and steroid injections that I didn't even realise that it had already been 2 weeks since my baby shower and 2 weeks since I made these bad boy cupcakes.

So I rather large surprise was thrust into my lap today and honestly if I didn't share it and this recipe with you no doubt more time would run away with me.

Taste of Donegal Food Festival

So with my lack of ability to eat any foods that are remotely divine I go and shove myself in the middle of a food festival. Yup that sounds pretty sane right?

Well last year I never got the chance to go to Taste of Donegal and after hearing all the fabulous reviews of all the incredible local food being showcased there I was determined to not miss out this year. I was not even going to let a little case of gestational diabetes stop me from at least sniffing the cakes and gourmet burgers.

Chocolate Almond Creams

Oh pregnancy why do you hate me so?

Last time round I spent half of my 2nd trimester and my entire 3rd trimester in and out of hospital due to Cholestasis of Pregnancy. Basically my liver decided it wasn't going to do its job and left me itching like a rabid dog with fleas day in day out.

And now second time round my pregnant body has decided Gestational Diabetes would be a bit of fun this time....

So cake, cookies, brownies, sweets. All the fun stuff you're supposed to be able to gorge on and not worry about are completely out for me.

Chocolate Cola Cake with Strawberry Buttercream

As a child I have many memories of my Ellie (my grandmother) taking me and my sisters to various plays and pantomimes, mainly around christmas time. I truly cherish these memories, even if now as my memory has faded and blurred a little I couldn't honestly tell you many specific shows we went to see at what time of year. I just have snippets of memories.

Such as sitting in a theatre while someone recited 'The Owl and The Pussycat' or feeling so insanely excited that we were about to go and see Chitty Chitty Bang Bang although I can't remember a single thing from the actual musical.
